Guest Blogger Melissa Moore: How to Fight Dry Skin in the Winter

What is your most irritating skin issue in the winter?!?! In my case, it’s dry skin. My heels get cracked, elbows feel rough, hands never feel hydrated and my lips get flaky. My daily lotion can only cover so much. I needed something heavy duty because my everyday lotion wasn’t cutting it...

When Good Oils Go Bad: What Makes an Oil Smell Rancid?

Posted by Sharon Gnatt Epel on

Has this ever happened to you? You go to your favorite natural food store to pick up a few items, find yourself in the cosmetics aisle and notice an appealing display stacked with colorfully labeled bottles of natural perfumes, lotions and exotic oils. Do You Know How to Prepare Your Skin for Autumn?

Posted by Sharon Gnatt Epel on

Just as there is no one-size-fits-all for most of the clothing you wear, there is no such thing as one single beauty routine that suits everyone all year round. Now that the Fall season is upon us and the weather is changing, it is time to re-visit your skincare routine and make adjustments to ensure that your skin won’t suffer as it tries to adapt to the seasonal changes in humidity and temperature. By the way, this holds true for all skintypes – whether you tend to be oily or are as dry as the Sahara.

1. While many people can get away with using a lighter cleanser during the summer months when the air tends to be a bit more humid, Fall and Winter both dictate the necessity for cleansers that will clean effectively without stripping your skin of essential moisture.

Helpful hint: When looking for a good cleanser, avoid products that contain SLS (Sodium lauryl and sodium laureth sulfates) because they are actually common pesticides used to kill plants and insects. They have corrosive properties, pollute our groundwater, and are known skin irritants. While bar soaps have improved somewhat over the years, they still tend to be more drying than liquid face washes because the binders that hold them together usually have a higher pH levelthan ingredients formulated for the face. Our recommendation: Try Gentle Aromatherapy Face Wash by La Ishá. It cleanses effectively without irritation or drying out the skin. It is not oily, and can be used safely on all skintypes.

2. Exfoliating your skin is probably the single most important thing you can do right now to get your skin into shape. Regular exfoliation not only makes you look better by removing the dead skin cells that block light refraction, in turn causing you look older than you are, but it also permits moisturizers and specialty treatments to penetrate the skin better, instead of just sitting on the surface. Our recommendation:Orange-Coconut Face Polish by La Ishá, designed specifically for use on the face, lips and neck.
3. Hydrate your skin and your body, both from within and without. This means you should increase your water intake (drink more!), and switch to a richer moisturizer or moisturizing cream, preferably one that has a non-occlusive oil base that will form a natural protective barrier against surface moisture evaporation. Be sure to apply to damp skin for maximum benefit. Our recommendation: Nutrient Rich Face Crème by La Ishá. Just a little dab’ll do ya! Plus, it can be used in conjunction with La Ishá Pomegranate Moisture Booster to customize the exact level of hydration you need on a day-to-day basis. Customizable moisture: now there’s a system you don’t often see on the cosmetic shelf!

*pH stands for potential hydrogen and refers to the acid-alkaline balance. If your skin is too acidic you are more likely to break out and experience skin irritations. If it is too alkaline, your skin may become too dry.
